This individual was a wizard or witch who taught Defense Against the Dark Arts sometime after the Battle of Hogwarts and the removal of the jinx that was placed on the post by Voldemort. As such, Hogwarts was able to keep this good teacher in the post going forward. From time to time, the professor allowed Harry Potter to give lectures on the subject after Harry became the head of the Auror Department. ^[1]
