Elizabeth Spriggs was an Olivier Award-winning and BAFTA Award-nominated English actress who portrayed the Fat Lady in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Career[]

Born in 1929, Spriggs longest role on television was perhaps that of Nan on Shine on Harvey Moon. She made frequent appearances on stage, and in 1979 received an Olivier Award for her supporting role in Love Letters on Blue Paper.

In 1995, she appeared in Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility alongside five other actors who would go on to appear in the Harry Potter series: Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Imelda Staunton, Robert Hardy, and Gemma Jones. For her performance in the film, she was nominated for a BAFTA Award, but lost out to co-star Kate Winslet.

One of her final performances was that of Miss Doggett in a BBC Radio adaptation of Jane and Prudence. She died on July 2nd, 2008 aged seventy-eight.
