Miles Bletchley is a wizard who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from (possibly) 1989 to 1995, and was the Keeper on the Slytherin Quidditch team from 1991 to 1995. Little else is known about him, other than the fact that he hexed Alicia Spinnet in the library in the week preceding the Gryffindor-Slytherin Quidditch season opener in autumn of 1993, causing her eyebrows to grow so long that they reached down to her mouth.
Behind the scenes[]
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Bletchley was portrayed as a female, despite there never having been any girls on the Slytherin squad in the books. It was confirmed that the female was Bletchley, as Lee Jordan stated in the film "Bletchley passes it to Captain Marcus Flint" when the female Keeper passed the Quaffle to Marcus Flint. In Chamber of Secrets, he was depicted as a redhead and was played by David Churchyard.
- In the video game Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup, the Slytherin Keeper is named "Kevin Bletchley". It is possible this was intended to be Miles.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, David Churchyard was credited as the Slytherin Keeper.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the Slytherin keeper was played by Amy Puglia.
Etymology[]
"Miles" is from the Germanic name Milo, introduced by the Normans to England in the form Miles. The meaning is not known for certain. It is possibly connected to the Slavic name element mil meaning "gracious". From an early date it was associated with Latin miles "soldier".
