A paper-owl,[1] also known as a delivery owl,[2] is an owl employed by the Daily Prophet to deliver editions of the newspaper to subscribers. Papers are apparently delivered to subscribers at a regular time: in 1995, Harry Potter always received his subscription at five o'clock in the morning.[3] The morning owl post at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry often contained a large number of paper-owls, as many students at the school were subscribers.
On 1 August, 1991 a paper-owl flew to the Hut-on-the-Rock to deliver that morning's Prophet to Rubeus Hagrid, who was asleep at the time. The owl was received by Harry Potter. The paper-owl dropped the paper on the sleeping Hagrid and immediately began attacking Hagrid's coat to search for money. The owl only stopped when Harry searched through the coat himself, placing the required five Knuts in a small pouch on the owl's leg.[4]
